Understanding Zakat
What is Zakat?
Zakat is one of the Five Pillars of Islam — an obligatory annual charity of 2.5% on wealth held above the Nisab threshold for one full Hijri year. It purifies wealth and redistributes to those in need.
Who must pay?
Any Muslim who holds wealth above the Nisab threshold for one full lunar year (Hawl), provided they are free, adult, sane and Muslim.
What is Nisab?
The minimum wealth threshold. NurBank uses the gold Nisab standard (85g of gold) — currently £5,185 (updated monthly). Some scholars use silver Nisab — consult your scholar.
Who can receive Zakat?
The Quran specifies 8 categories (At-Tawbah 9:60): the poor, the destitute, Zakat collectors, those whose hearts are to be reconciled, those in bondage, those in debt, for Allah's cause, and the traveller.
